For me a garden is a place to relax with friends and family, as well as a refuge where you can take time out of your busy day to recharge your batteries.

We look at a garden. We like what we see. But why?

Gardens have come a long way. They used to be about growing food, and growing large amounts of lawn, and not a great deal else. Now what makes a garden is completely different, it has become more to do with lifestyle. We want an outdoor kitchen, outdoor living room, dining room, and playroom. Somewhere to entertain, somewhere to escape, and maybe even to impress our friends.

Although many covet huge gardens, some of the smallest gardens are the best, the lack of space forces creativity - they need lateral thinking and imagination. Smaller gardens are likely to experience problems such as light and soil type and quality. People tend to want to cram everything into a small space, but good design is just as much about what you leave out, not just what you put in.

Large gardens also have their problems. They need to be landscaped, given verticals and character. Sizable plots run the risk of being left flat, wide open spaces, laid to lawn and lacking personality.

Gardens deliver at a subconscious level, and more often than not we’re not aware of what is right in a garden, but we do notice what is wrong.

A well designed garden, will help you relax, with well-balanced sights, sounds and smells. A poorly designed garden, will feel clunky, and have the opposite effect to relaxing. Your eyes will be drawn to different focal points at the same time, smells will clash with each other, and will, at a subliminal level, distress you. Avoid having landscape builders design your garden for you, they lack the creativity and inspiration to create the ultimate environment for you to unwind in. Their expertise lie in the build of the garden.

An outside space can speak volumes about a person, and is the first impression that an outsider will get. It is the exterior, the clothing of your home, so dress it well.

Every garden should be about individual expression and passion, and a unique space. I try to put clients’ visions into my interpretations, as then they will feel a sense of ownership and be more interested in helping to develop and look after the garden I have created for them. I am very passionate about creating gardens for other people to enjoy for the rest of their lives. I believe that spiritual comfort and peace can be achieved by nurturing plants within a garden. Experimentation is the best form of expression and our wellbeing often depends upon it.
